Dread insists there is only one frame. A joke does not erase the problem; it proves another frame is possible. That restored freedom to reinterpret may be the funny cousin of Deutsch's fun criterion.

  1. Fun is epistemic, not frivolous. Deutsch describes fun as knowledge creation in which explicit, inexplicit, conscious, and unconscious ideas can criticize one another. Lack of fun is a criticism to investigate, not an automatic stop rule. Deutsch with Dwarkesh Patel
  2. Humor can loosen mortality's grip. In a 2019 experiment with 556 participants, coping humor buffered the effect of mortality salience on death-thought accessibility. The humor induction mattered most for people low in coping humor. Morgan, Smith, and Singh
  3. A funny frame can outperform a serious one. In a 57-person study, humorous reappraisal was harder to generate than serious reappraisal, but reduced negative emotion and increased positive emotion more effectively. Some benefits remained one week later. Samson, Glassco, Lee, and Gross
  4. Amusement helps the body reopen. After anxiety induction, amusing and contentment films produced faster cardiovascular recovery than neutral or sad films in a 170-person experiment.   5. Even anticipated threat can become less total. In a small 1990 lab study, participants expecting an electric shock reported less anxiety when they heard a humorous tape. It is suggestive, not proof that comedy cures dread. Yovetich, Dale, and Hudak
